The Ultimate Green Smoothie
If you are looking for an easy green juice recipe that does not require a juicer look no further. Celery and parsley are the two most ideal green plant foods for natural detoxification.
The Health Benefits
Combined together celery and parsley provide a very rich supply of antioxidants which aid liver detoxification. They also have diuretic properties which facilitate movement of waste through the kidneys. For this reason, they are both used in the holistic treatment of kidney stones, arthritis and gout.
Lemon stimulates gut motility and the secretion of bile acids from the gall bladder, which is the all important final stage of liver detoxification. Lemon also protects against kidney stones and improves absorption of minerals from food.
Celery has a unique type of pectin fibre which protects the stomach from ulcers and heartburn and calms inflammation in the digestive tract. Since apple is another rich source of pectin fibre, when combined together they will act as a prebiotic, feeding healthy gut bacteria, improving gut barrier function and encouraging good elimination.
A handful of parsley contains nearly every essential micronutrient needed by the body, but has notably high levels of vitamin C (53% DV), and iron (10% DV). When the vitamin C from lemon and parsley are paired together they improve absorption of plant antioxidants and iron. This makes the celery-parsley smoothie an ideal detoxifier but also a good blood builder. And lastly, parsley has also been studied for its ability to inhibit the secretion of histamine, making it a perfect green drink for the allergy season!
1 celery stalk
1 handful parsley
Wash the vegetables and chop coarsely. Juice the lemon. Add all ingredients into a high-power blender and blend on high for 30-60 seconds.
To pulp or not to pulp?
Green smoothies are quite pulpy, which is both good and bad. The good part is that is preserves the fibre content of the fruits and vegetables, which helps to keep blood sugar levels stable and supports healthy gut flora. The not so good side of a pulpy green juice is the mouth feel.
My solution is to pour half my juice through a fine mesh nut milk bag or strainer. This makes the juice more smooth and fluid while retaining 50% of the fibre content.
